Don’t standby your appliances

Switching off lights saves money. Lots of it.
In the typical UK household, light accounts for between 10 and 20 per cent of every energy bill. Switching lights off and moving over to energy-saving light bulbs can reduce your energy bills by a hefty amount.
Don’t be put off if you think energy-saving bulbs take a long time to get bright. They’ve improved a great deal recently and the modern ones reach full brightness in seconds.
New energy-saving light bulbs use very low levels of energy. Switching them on and off uses no more electricity than leaving them on for a minute or two. So, unless your absence from a room is to be brief, you’re better off switching the lights off.
Switching to energy-efficient light bulbs will have an instant effect on your energy bills. It may be a difficult habit to get into at first, but when you see the bills go down, you’ll soon get into the habit of turning lights off behind you.
