How the market works

Wholesaler, retailer and your right to switch

Your regional wholesaler (such as Thames Water or Severn Trent) still owns the pipes and delivers the water. Your retailer handles your billing, meter reads and customer service, and that is the part you can switch.

It’s the same water through the same pipes, just a retailer that gives you a better rate and service. If you’ve never switched, you’ll be on your wholesaler’s default tariff, which is usually the most you can be charged.

England: open market since April 2017
Scotland: open market since 2008
Wales: large users over 50 million litres a year
Same supply, no interruption when you switch
Deal with one retailer, even across sites
Domestic water cannot be switched
KNOW YOUR BILL

What makes up your business water bill

Unlike gas and electricity, your water bill has two sides: the clean water coming in and the wastewater going out.

Freshwater charges

A volumetric charge for the clean water you use, measured per cubic metre, plus a fixed charge for your meter.

Wastewater & sewerage

A charge for the water that drains away to the sewer, plus a fixed charge towards maintaining the network.

Standing charges

Fixed daily fees that cover billing, customer service and maintaining your connection, charged whatever your usage.

VAT

Most businesses pay no VAT on water. Those in certain industries (such as construction, manufacturing, engineering, chemicals and utilities) are charged 20%.

Business water questions, answered

Can my business switch water supplier?

If your premises is in England or Scotland and has a primary business use, you’re free to switch your water retailer. In Wales only large users (over 50 million litres a year) can switch, and domestic water can’t be switched. If you’ve never switched, you’ll be on your regional default tariff.

Will my water supply turn off when I switch?

No. You’re only changing the retailer who manages your billing and service. The pipes, the wholesaler and the water itself stay exactly the same, with no interruption to your supply.

How long does it take to switch business water?

Usually around 21 to 28 days, including a short cooling-off period. It helps to take a meter reading before the switch so your final bill is accurate. We keep you updated throughout.

Does it cost anything to switch?

Switching itself is free. The only time a cost applies is if you leave an existing contract early, which can carry an exit fee, so it’s worth weighing any saving against that. Switching in your renewal window avoids exit fees entirely.

What is a SPID and do I need it?

A SPID (Supply Point ID) is the unique reference for your water supply, made up of ten digits followed by a letter (W for water, S for sewerage), so most premises have two. You’ll find it on a recent water bill. It isn’t essential to start, but it makes your quote more accurate.

What's the difference between a wholesaler and a retailer?

The wholesaler owns and maintains the pipes and network for your region and physically delivers the water. The retailer handles your billing, meter reads and customer service. You can switch your retailer, but your wholesaler stays the same.

Can I switch if I'm still in contract?

Yes, though leaving early may mean an exit fee, so compare the saving against that cost. The simplest route is to switch in your renewal window, where you can line up a new deal to start the moment your current contract ends with no penalty.

Do I pay VAT on business water?

Most businesses pay no VAT on water and sewerage. Businesses in certain industries, such as construction, manufacturing, engineering, chemicals, mining, textiles and utilities, are charged 20%. Your retailer can confirm which applies to you.

Can I put multiple sites on one water bill?

Yes. If you operate across different water regions you’ll currently deal with more than one retailer. Switching with us lets you consolidate everything onto a single retailer, one bill and one point of contact, which usually saves time and money.

How do unmetered water charges work?

Some older premises have no water meter. Instead of charging for actual usage, the retailer applies a fixed charge plus an amount based on the building’s rateable value. If you’d benefit from a meter, we can talk you through having one fitted.

Which water company supplies my area?

Your wholesaler is set by your region and shown on a recent water bill. If you can’t find it, you can look it up via Water UK’s “find your supplier” tool. Your retailer, on the other hand, is whoever you choose to switch to.
