KNOW YOUR BILL

What makes up your business gas bill

Four things drive what you pay. Understanding them make it far easier to compare quotes properly.

Unit rate (p/kWh)

The price you pay for each kilowatt-hour of gas you use. Higher-usage businesses usually secure a lower unit rate.

Standing charge

A fixed daily fee that covers maintaining the gas network and delivering gas to your premises, charged whether you use any or not.

Climate Change Levy

A government tax on business energy charged per kWh to encourage efficiency. Some low-usage businesses and charities are exempt.

VAT

Most businesses pay 20% VAT on gas. Charities and very low-usage sites (under 4,397 kWh a month) may qualify for the reduced 5% rate.

Before you compare

Business gas questions, answered

What is the average business gas price per kWh in 2026?

As a guide, average business gas unit rates sit around 8p to 11p per kWh in 2026, with smaller businesses usually paying a little more per unit than larger ones. Rates move with the wholesale market and the seasons, so the quickest way to see your price is to compare with your postcode.

Should I fix my business gas prices?

A fixed-rate tariff locks in your unit rate and standing charge for the contract term, which protects you from price rises and makes budgeting simple. With the market calmer but still seasonal, many businesses are choosing to lock in. We can show you fixed deals from across our panel.

Is business gas more expensive than domestic?

The unit price of business gas is usually lower than domestic because of higher consumption. However, businesses pay 20% VAT (versus 5% for homes) and the Climate Change Levy, and aren’t covered by the domestic price cap, which can make overall bills higher.

How much VAT do I pay on business gas?

Most businesses pay the standard 20% VAT, added automatically by your supplier. Charities, non-profits and very low-usage sites (under 4,397 kWh of gas a month) may qualify for the reduced 5% rate. Your supplier can provide a VAT declaration form.

What is an MPRN and where do I find it?

Your MPRN (Meter Point Reference Number) is the unique reference for your gas supply, sometimes called the “M number”. You’ll find it on a recent gas bill. Having it to hand gives the most accurate quote, but if you can’t find it, just enter your postcode and our engine can usually locate it.

What factors affect business gas prices?

Several things shape your rate: wholesale gas prices, seasonal supply and demand, your location, your annual consumption and business size, your meter type, and your contract length. Larger users usually secure lower unit rates. The only way to see your actual rate is to run a live comparison.

How do I read my business gas meter?

There are three common types. On a standard (dial or imperial) meter, read the first four or five digits left to right and ignore any in red. On a digital meter, read the digits before the decimal point. A smart meter sends readings automatically, but you can read it like a digital meter if needed.

Can I cancel my business gas contract early?

Leaving a contract early usually means a hefty early termination fee, so it’s rarely worthwhile. The better route is to secure a new deal up to 12 months before your contract ends, ready to start when the current one finishes. We’ll track that renewal window for you.

Can I switch business gas if I work from home?

You can take a business gas contract if at least 50% of your gas use is for business purposes, though some suppliers set different thresholds. It’s worth comparing both business and domestic options to see which works out cheaper for your situation.

Can I switch gas for multiple buildings?

Yes. Businesses with several premises can switch and consolidate their gas onto one account, even where contracts currently end on different dates. A multi-site arrangement makes renewals and billing much easier to manage. Our team can set this up for you.

Am I classed as a micro business?

You’re usually classed as a micro business if you employ fewer than 10 people with turnover under €2 million, or use less than 293,000 kWh of gas a year. Micro businesses get extra protections, including renewal notices and credit back if a supplier goes bust.

What happens if my gas supplier goes bust?

You won’t lose supply. Ofgem appoints a new supplier to take over your account, and you simply wait to be contacted. Take a meter reading and avoid switching during the process. Note that larger businesses aren’t covered by the domestic safety net, so any credit balance is at the new supplier’s discretion.

Does a landlord pay business gas rates?

It depends on the lease. Sometimes the landlord includes gas in the rent and covers it, sometimes they manage the supply and invoice the tenant, and sometimes the tenant manages the contract directly. Many tenants prefer the last option so they can compare and switch to save.

How long does it take to switch business gas?

Once your new contract is confirmed, a switch typically completes within a few weeks, with no interruption to your supply at any point. Our team handles the paperwork and keeps you updated on progress.
