This policy explains how we collect, use, share and protect your personal data when you use Utility Saving Expert to compare and switch business energy. 1. Who we are

For the purposes of data protection law, the data controller is Simply Quote Comparison Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales (company number 15008284), whose registered office is Sentinel House, Ancells Business Park, Harvest Crescent, Fleet, Hampshire, GU51 2UZ. Simply Quote Comparison Ltd trades as UtilitySavingExpert.com.

2. What this policy covers

This policy applies to personal data we collect when you:

  • visit or use our website;
  • request a business energy comparison or quote, or use our comparison tools;
  • contact us by phone, email, web form or live chat;
  • subscribe to our newsletter or enter a prize draw or promotion; or
  • interact with us on social media or through our marketing.

“Personal data” means any information that relates to an identified or identifiable person. This policy does not cover the practices of third parties, including energy suppliers or other websites we link to, which have their own privacy policies.

3. Information we collect

We collect information in three ways: information you give us, information we collect automatically, and information we receive from third parties.

Information you give us

  • Identity and contact details, such as your name, business name, job role, email address, phone number and business address;
  • Business and energy details needed to prepare a comparison, such as your postcode, meter numbers (MPAN and MPRN), current supplier, tariff, contract end date and annual consumption;
  • Information contained in a recent energy bill you share with us;
  • The content of your enquiries and any correspondence with us, including recorded phone calls; and
  • Your marketing preferences and any prize-draw or competition entries.

Information we collect automatically

  • Technical data such as your IP address, browser type and version, device information, operating system and time zone;
  • Usage data about how you use our website, including pages viewed, links clicked and referring pages; and
  • Cookie and similar identifier data, as described in our cookies section below.

Information we receive from third parties

  • Energy usage and supply data from data providers, industry databases and, with your authority, your current or previous energy supplier;
  • Information from our comparison technology partner, Love Business Group Ltd, and from suppliers on your behalf; and
  • Information from analytics, advertising and marketing partners, and from publicly available sources such as company registers.

4. How we use your information, and why

We only use your personal data where the law allows us to. Utility Saving Expert arranges your business energy comparison and switching service for you. The comparison itself is carried out using technology provided by our partner, Love Business Group Ltd, who run the comparison on our behalf so that we can present you with quotes and help you switch. The table below sets out the main purposes for which your data is used and the lawful basis we rely on for each.

Where we rely on legitimate interests, we make sure those interests are not overridden by your rights. Where we rely on consent, you can withdraw it at any time.

5. Marketing and the prize draw

If you subscribe to our newsletter, enter our prize draw or otherwise opt in, we may send you energy-saving tips, market updates, offers and information about our services. Every subscriber to our newsletter may be entered into our prize draw in line with the promotion’s terms and conditions.

You can opt out of marketing at any time by using the unsubscribe link in any email, or by contacting us. Opting out of marketing will not affect any comparison or service you have asked us to provide. We will never sell your personal data.

6. Who we share your information with

We share your personal data only where necessary to provide our service, meet a legal obligation or pursue a legitimate interest. We may share your data with:

  • Energy suppliers and brokers, so they can provide quotes and, where you choose to proceed, arrange your contract and switch;
  • Our comparison technology partner, Love Business Group Ltd, which provides the technology that powers our business energy comparison service and carries out the comparison on our behalf;
  • Companies within our group, including our parent Simply Quote Comparison Ltd and sister brand SimplyQuote, where relevant to a service you have asked about;
  • Service providers that support our business, such as hosting, IT, analytics, marketing, customer support and payment providers, acting on our instructions;
  • Professional advisers, regulators and authorities where we are required or permitted to do so by law; and
  • A buyer or successor if we sell or reorganise part of our business.

Where we share data with third parties who act as their own controllers, such as energy suppliers, their use of your data is governed by their own privacy policies. We put appropriate contracts in place with providers who process data on our behalf.

7. Letter of Authority

To gather accurate information and arrange a switch, we may ask you to provide a Letter of Authority (LOA). An LOA authorises us to speak to your current and prospective energy suppliers on your behalf, and to obtain details of your supply, usage and contract. You can withdraw an LOA at any time by contacting us.

8. International transfers

We aim to keep your personal data within the UK. Where a provider processes data outside the UK, we make sure appropriate safeguards are in place, such as UK adequacy regulations or the International Data Transfer Agreement, so your data continues to receive an equivalent level of protection.

9. How long we keep your information

We keep your personal data only for as long as we need it for the purposes set out in this policy, including to meet legal, accounting, regulatory and reporting requirements. The period varies depending on the type of data and why we hold it. When we no longer need your data, we securely delete or anonymise it.

10. How we protect your information

We use appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect your personal data against loss, misuse, unauthorised access, disclosure or alteration. These include access controls, encryption in transit, staff training and supplier due diligence. No transmission over the internet is completely secure, so while we work hard to protect your data we cannot guarantee its absolute security.

Our website uses cookies and similar technologies to make the site work, remember your preferences, measure performance and support marketing.   • Portability, to receive certain data in a portable format;
  • Object to processing based on our legitimate interests, and to direct marketing at any time; and
  • Withdraw consent at any time where we rely on it.

To exercise any of these rights, please contact us using the details below. We will respond within one month, and we will not usually charge a fee. We may need to verify your identity before acting on a request.

13. Automated decision-making

We may use automated tools to help match you to suitable tariffs and suppliers. We do not make decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects about you based solely on automated processing without human involvement. If this changes, we will update this policy and tell you about your rights.

14. Children

Our services are intended for businesses and are not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 18. If you believe we have done so, please contact us and we will delete it.

15. Other websites

Our website may contain links to third-party websites, including energy suppliers and our sister brand SimplyQuote. This policy does not apply to those websites, and we are not responsible for their content or privacy practices. Please review their privacy policies before providing any personal data.

16. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or the law. When we make material changes, we will update the last-updated date at the top of this document and, where appropriate, let you know by other means. Please check back periodically.
