Hastings Direct was founded in 1997, at that time they only focused on car insurance. Over the years, the company’s growth has allowed them to expand and cover a number of additional insurance types including bike insurance, home insurance, and personal injury claims.

Since February 2018, there are three additional options for their comprehensive car cover policies, these include:

Essential car insurance

This is the most basic level of comprehensive cover. The ‘Essential’ level includes damaged caused through accidents, fire and theft, and vanalism. This is the lower tier level of cover but still has the added benefits of a courtesy car and car repairs for three years.

Standard car insurance

This is the next step up from ‘Essential’ cover. It includes everything from the above package with additional benefits. The main difference is that it also covers in car audio and satellite navigation equipment plus key and lock replacement.

Premier car insurance

The ‘Premier’ package is the most extensive. It covers everything from the two options above with a number of additional extras as standard. These extras include windscreen cover, personal belongings, travel and hotel expenses if your car has a problem with completing your journey.

Black box cover

Hastings also offers one further addition to its range of car insurance policies. This is called ‘Smart Miles’, it is essentially a black box insurance policy.

Black box insurance will allow drivers who prioritise safe driving to reduce their insurance premium. A black box is a device that collects data, it’s fitted to your car and will monitor your driving behaviour. This may be especially useful for inexperienced or young drivers. Here are a few different things the black box will monitor:

  • How you are accelerating
  • How you are braking
  • How you are cornering
  • Location driven from and to
  • Amount of mileage
  • The time of day / night you drive

What if I want multi-car insurance?

If you own more than one vehicle, a multi-car insurance policy can be very useful to have. Hastings offers new customers a discount on both policies, whilst existing customers can take advantage of a 10% discount on a second car insurance policy.

The insurance provider will insure both drivers within any single household, whether you’re related or not. You also have the option to add additional vehicles to your policy at any moment in time, this can be useful for those who may purchase an additional car later down the road.

Will they offer me breakdown cover?

Yes, Hastings Direct have a number of breakdown options available to customers. This ranges from roadside recovery within the UK to European cover.

As standard, each option includes misfuelling protection if you were to accidentally put the wrong fuel type into your car. Nobody wants to put petrol in a diesel or vice versa.

What if I wish to cancel my car insurance?

Despite the insurer being recognised for various industry awards and having generally good customer feedback reviews, like all insurers, they are not free from some criticism. Many customers have issues with the cancellation process and this has been raised numerous times. Customers are specifically frustrated by the cancelation fees. Although you are able to cancel the policy at any time, charges will apply.

If you wish to cancel during the 14-day cooling off period, a cancellation fee will still apply. High cancellation fees and mixed reviews for this whole process are not uncommon. It is important that you read the terms and conditions before taking out any policy.
